Monitoring of wild mammals on the major sites of the Sochi-2014 winter Olympic games

Information about occurrence of wild animals and their vestiges on the major sites of the Sochi-2014 winter Olympic games was gathered based on the method used by game wardens in the Sochi National Park and other reserves. This is a unified and simplified system for collecting filed material within biological monitoring. The system includes the following cards:

  • Card of registering wild animals and their vestiges;
  • Card of registering animal deaths;
  • Card of eye assessment of yielding capacity of tree and bush species.

All information collected is converted in e-form and processed by special-purpose software. Transfer of data from fiield cards to e-form allows not only developing a database, which is updated continuously, but also obtaining certain indicators accounting for the condition of the population of wild animals in different time intervals and different study areas.

Additionally in Sochi National Parks game wardens annually perform winter track recording of wild animals, autumn recording of bellowing deers, visual counting of turs and gazelles in the mountain-meadow belt, autumn recording of brown bears on feeding areas.
